Heartsaver Course Descriptions

Heartsaver AED

• The American Heart Association Heartsaver AED course covers AED, CPR and use of barrier devices for adults.
  
• Considerations to determine proper age for use adult skills for CPR and AED is:
  • Children who have reached puberty are considered adults for the purposes of CPR and AED.

• A skills test is required.
  
• Successful completion of these skills according to AHA Guidelines is required to pass this course.  All necessary material is contained in the student workbook.
• After successful completion of this class, a card valid for two years will be issued.

BLS for Health Care Provider (HCP) Course Descriptions

BLS for HCP

• This American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers Course for audiences such as EMS personnel, doctors, nurses, dentists, etc., who are required to have a credential documenting successful course completion.
  
• Core materials include:
  
• 1-rescuer and 2-rescuer CPR/AED for Adult, Child and Infant
  
• Difference between Adult, Child and Infant rescue
  
• Use of Bag-mask techniques for Adult, Child and Infant
  
• Rescue breathing for Adult, child and Infant
  
• Relief of choking for Adult, Child and Infant
  
• Introduction to CPR with an Advanced Airway
• Successful completion of a written test and skills test are required to pass this course.
  
• Successful completion of these skills according to AHA Guidelines is required to pass this course.  All necessary material is contained in the student workbook.
• After course completion criteria are met, a card valid for two years will be issued.

BLS for HCP Renewal

• This American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers Course for healthcare professionals who need to know how to perform CPR as well as other lifesaving skills in a wide variety of in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings.  this includes audiences such as EMS personnel, doctors, nurses, dentists, etc., who are required to have a credential documenting successful course completion who have previously taken a BLS for HCP class.
  
• It is recommended that students taking the BLS Renewal have a current American Heart Association BLS for HCP card.
  
• If a student does not have a current BLS for HCP card, they may take this class but if they do not pass there will not be an opportunity granted for remediation of skills or written test and the student will need to register for a BLS for HCP Provider Course at the full cost of the provider course.
  
• Successful completion of a written test and skills test are required to pass this course.  
  
• Successful completion of these skills according to AHA Guidelines is required to pass this course.  All necessary material is contained in the student workbook.  
• After completion criteria are met, a card valid for two years will be issued.
• 4 hour course

Certification Skills Course for the AHA BLS Online Renewal Course

• The American Heart Association BLS Online Renewal Course is a two part course.
  
• The first part of a two part course is completed online and it reviews and tests the cognitive course content required for successful completion of the BLS for HCP course.
  
• Only the American Heart Association approved course can be taken as the first part of this course - www.onlineaha.org
• The skills check off session is the second part of this course that tests these skills:
  
• 1-rescuer and 2-rescuer CPR/AED for Adult, Child and Infant
• Use of a bag-mask
• Use of an adult and pediatric face mask
• Skill Certification takes one half hour
• It is recommended that students taking the AHA BLS Online Renewal Course have a current BLS for HCP card.
  
• If a student does not have a current BLS card, they may take this class but if they do not pass there will not be an opportunity granted for remediation of skills or written test and the student will need to register for a BLS Provider Course at the full fee for the BLS for HCP class.

BLS Instructor Course

• The American Heart Association BLS Instructor Course prepares Instructor Candidates to teach the BLS Provider and Renewal courses, Heartsaver courses, and Family and Friends courses.
  
• Instructor candidates must have excellent skills and have a recommendation from an instructor to attend this course.
  
• Requirements for this course include:
  
• Current American Heart Association BLS for HCP card
  
• Letter of recommendation
  
• Alignment with an American Heart Association Training Center
  
• Heartsaver First Aid card if candidate is not a health care provider
  
• Excellent CPR skills to be demonstrated before the course
  
• Completion of the Core Instructor Course prior to the classroom BLS Instructor Course
  
• After successful completion of the Core Instructor Course, BLS Instructor Course and monitoring teaching a BLS for HCP course the instructor candidate will be considered successful in the course completion and an Instructor card will be issued by the candidates chosen AHA Training Center.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support Provider 2-Day Course

• This two-day American Heart Association ACLS Provider Course is designed for healthcare professionals to enhance their skills in the treatment of the adult victim of a cardiac arrest or other cadiopulmonary emergencies.  Emphasis is placed on the importance of basic life support CPR to patient survival.  Effective basic life support along with advanced cadiovascular life support interventions and the importance of effective tearm interaction and communication during resuscitation are the core concepts of this course. 
  
• This course emphasizes these areas:  
  
• Proficiency in basic life support care
  
• Recognizing and initiating early management of periarrest conditions
  
• Managing cardiac arrest 
  
• Identifying and treating ischemic chest pain and acute coronary syndromes

HeartCode ACLS eLearning Program

• The Skills Check Off portion of the HeartCode ACLS eLearning Program is for those students who have completed the HeartCode ACLS Part 1 web-based program.
  
• The HeartCode ACLS Part 1 web-based program is a self-paced instruction program that uses eSimulation technology to allow students to assess and treat patients in virtual healthcare settings.  In this environment, students apply their knowledge to real-time decision making skills development.  Debriefings and coaching
  are provided immediately after each simulation to facilitate learning.  The online program presents 10 interactive, adult, in-hospital cases to teach the Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support treatment algorithms.
  
• After completing the cognitive portion of the course, students practice and test their skills with an AHA ACLS Instructor.
  
• Students must bring their certificate of completion of the online course with them in order to have their skills checked off.
  
• Upon successful completion of the cognitive (online course completion certificate issued online) and skills tests, students receive a course completion card.
  
• 1- hour for Skills Check Off
  
• 10 hours (approximately) for HeartCode ACLS Part 1 (online program)

Pediatric Advanced Life Support Provider 2-Day Course

• This two-day American Heart Association Pediatric Advanced Life Support Course is designed for healthcare providers who respond to emergencies in infants and children.  These include personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive care and critical care units such as physicians, nurses, paramedics and others who need a PALS course completion card for a job or other requirements.  Emphasis is placed on the importance of life support with pediatric life support interventions and the importance of effective instruction and communication during resuscitation. 
  
• This course includes:

• 1 and 2- rescuer Infant CPR
  
• Management of respiratory emergencies

• This one-day American Heart Association PEdiatric Advanced Life Support course uses a scenario-based, team approach to teach pediatric emergency respiratory management or cardiac arrest.  the PALS course is for healthcare providers who initiate and direct advanced life support in pediatric emergencies training and need to obtain a PALS course completion card.

HeartCode PALS eLearning Program

• The Skills Check Off portion of the HeartCode PALS eLearning Program is for those students who have completed the HeartCode ACLS Part 1 web-based program.  There is a fee for the skills check off and the key code needed to complete the online portion of the class.
  
• The  HeartCode ACLS Part 1 web-based program is a self-paced instruction program that uses eSimulation technology to allow students to assess and treat patients in virtual healthcare settings.  In this environment, students apply their knowledge to real-time decision making skills development.  Debriefings and coaching
  are provided immediately after each simulation to facilitate learning.  The online program presents 12 pediatric hospital-based, patient cases with up to four healthcare providers that are presented through eSimulation.
  
• After completing the cognitive portion of the course, students practice and test their skills with an AHA PALS Instructor.
  
• Students must bring their certificate of completion of the online course with them in order to have their skills checked off.
  
• Upon successful completion of the cognitive (online course completion certificate issued online) and skills tests, students receive a course completion card.
  
• 1.5- hour for Skills Check Off
  
• 6-9 hours (approximately) for HeartCode PALS Part 1 (online program)
